Carthage Street Makeover Subject of Lee County Open House

SANFORD – The N.C. Department of Transportation wants public feedback on a proposal to reconstruct almost a mile of Carthage Street to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

The proposal, which the city of Sanford has endorsed, would convert the street’s open center-turn lane between Fire Tower Road and Wicker Street into a raised median, preserving one travel lane in each direction. As part of the project, roundabouts on Carthage Street would be built at Fire Tower Road; at Fields Drive; and at Wicker Street. Pedestrian crosswalks would be added to each roundabout.

In keeping with the department’s Complete Streets philosophy to consider alternative ways of traveling, a 10-foot multilane path would be built on the same side of the street as Central Carolina hospital, and a five-foot sidewalk would go up along the other side of Carthage Street.

People may look at the design maps, ask questions and offer comments during an informal open house from 4-7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Elks Lodge, 910 Carthage St., Sanford.

Copies of the preliminary design maps of the road project are on the NCDOT website.
The department will review and consider comments sent by Dec. 27 in finalizing the roadway design.

The project, with an overall estimated $11 million cost, is scheduled to start construction in 2021.
