San Souci Cable Ferry Resumes Service After Overhaul

San Souci Cable Ferry

WINDSOR – The San Souci Ferry, one of only three remaining inland cable ferries in North Carolina, resumed service this week after an extensive, year-long renovation.

The ferry, which connects Woodard Road and San Souci Road over the Cashie River in rural Bertie County, was pulled out of the water in October 2017. Since then, NCDOT crews and contractors have given the vessel a complete overhaul and rebuilt the gear house and other accessories on the boat. The total cost of the overhaul was $100,000.

Cable ferries like the San Souci Ferry are guided across a river or large body of water by cables connected to both shores. The other two cable ferries in the state are Parker’s Ferry in Hertford County and the Elwell Ferry in Bladen County.
