Southern Wake County Bridge to Be Replaced

KENNEBEC – Thanks to an N.C. Department of Transportation contract, a bridge near the southernmost tip of Wake County will be replaced.

Built in 1966, the Wimberly Road bridge extending over Little Black Creek is safe, but is due for upgrades, as its average daily use is expected to increase nearly 82 percent over the next 20 years.

Contractors are expected to begin the replacement work between Dec. 31 and May 1, 2019. They will have 180 days from beginning work to complete the quarter-mile-long project.

While the bridge is closed for the replacement, thru-traffic motorists will take a short detour around the worksite using Lipscomb Road, N.C. 210, and Old Stage Road. Closure and detour signs will be posted to assist travel.

This is one of nine highway and bridge projects awarded in November by the N.C. Department of Transportation. As required by state law, the contracts went to the lowest qualified bidder. They are worth $488.1 million.
