Crews Prepare Triad Roads for Winter Weather

GREENSBORO – N.C. Department of Transportation crews have spent Friday applying salt brine on major highways to prepare for wintry weather that could bring as much as a foot of snow to parts of the Triad over the weekend.

The department's Highway Division 7 crews are focusing on brining all interstates, four-lane primary routes and secondary routes considered essential to local and regional mobility. Crews will continue to monitor the forecast to be prepared to report for snow removal in Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties, which comprise Division 7.

In these counties, there are 96 employees and 39 trucks working are spraying brine, which is a mixture of water and 23 percent salt. Each NCDOT county maintenance office produces the brine, which is a cost-effective way to pretreat the roads before winter weather. More details about the use of brine and its benefits can be found on this NCDOT webpage.

Drivers are reminded to use extreme caution if they are out in the winter weather because of the anticipated slick conditions. Winter weather tips for motorists can be found on the NCDOT website.
