Black Ice a Concern as Triad Road-Clearing Efforts Continue

GREENSBORO – Road-clearing efforts continue in the Triad region ahead of an expected freeze overnight.

With temperatures dropping into the 20s, black ice is expected to be a major issue across the region Tuesday morning.

Motorists who must drive are encouraged to use caution.

“We hope to have everything in good shape by Tuesday evening," said John Rhyne, the N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance engineer for Highway Division 9, which consists of Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Rowan and Stokes counties.

"With this amount of snow, black ice will be an issue we face for several days, and drivers should use caution tomorrow morning and take it slow,” Rhyne said.

NCDOT crews shifted focus to secondary roads in the Triad on Monday, after an additional wave of snow led them to revisit interstates and primary routes.

Major roadways in Division 7 (Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties) and Division 9 are mostly clear with icy spots.

Progress on secondary roads varies throughout the divisions.

In Guilford County, secondaries are 4 percent clear with icy spots and 96 percent untouched. In Forsyth County, they are 85 percent partially clear or clear with icy spots, and 15 percent untouched.

NCDOT has used more than 6,400 tons of salt in Division 7 and 3,550 tons of salt in Division 9.

The department had more than 375 employees and 290 trucks and graders working on de-icing operations across Divisions 7 and 9 on Monday, in addition to more than 370 contract trucks.
