Lane Closures on I-277 to Continue After Holidays

CHARLOTTE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will continue a $16.3 million project to improve 22 bridges along the I-277 corridor in January. Lifting the closure until next year will allow for easier holiday travel.

The contractor placed barrier wall Dec. 3 on the inner loop to work on the bridges over Elizabeth Avenue, Third Street and Fourth Street. Crews will finish putting an epoxy overlay on the structures before removing the barrier wall overnight Wednesday, Dec. 19. This overlay will improve the riding surface for drivers.

Crews will return at 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, to reinstall the barrier wall, providing a safe area to continue full depth concrete pavement repairs. With good weather, the work may take up to a week.

While the barrier wall is in place around the clock, traffic will be reduced to one lane on the inner loop past the Tenth Street exit, continuing to Third Street. At the same time, the left lane of U.S. 74 West approaching I-277 will be closed while work is underway.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and prepare for delays.
