Two Stanly County Bridges to be Improved

ALBEMARLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $20.1 million contract to PCL Civil Constructors, Inc. of Raleigh to improve two bridges crossing the Pee Dee River in Stanly County.

While the bridges are safe for drivers, extensive rehabilitation work is needed to extend their service life. The project involves rehabilitation work to both bridges, including the replacement of the existing westbound arch bridge’s deck, built in 1927. The bridge’s architectural character will remain intact during construction.

The project is scheduled to start in January 2019, with the contract calling for traffic to be in a two-lane, two-way pattern on one bridge by May 2019. Once that pattern is in place, work can commence on the older arch bridge.

Overall project completion for both bridges is scheduled for September 2021.

This is one of nine highway and bridge projects awarded statewide in November by the N.C. Department of Transportation. As required by state law, the contracts went to the lowest qualified bidder.
