Walkertown - The N.C. Department of
Transportation has awarded a contract for the D, E and F portions of work along
the Eastern section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway project.
The $120 million project will include widening, drainage work, signing
and structure improvements along a 6.9 mile section of the beltway (Future I-74)
from University Parkway to New Walkertown Road.
“Once
complete this work will help accommodate future growth by alleviating congestion
and improving safety along heavily traveled routes in Forsyth County,” said
Division Nine Engineer Pat Ivey.
Work can begin as
early as Monday, April 30, with final completion, including landscaping,
anticipated for July 2022.
Eventually, the Beltway
will provide a 34-mile multi-lane freeway around the northern side of
Winston-Salem. The rest of the eastern section of the Beltway will connect U.S.
311 southeast of the city to U.S. 52, and will become a part of the I-74
corridor when finished. The western section will continue around to U.S. 158 on
the southwestern side of the city.
The Beltway will
reduce traffic congestion and provide interstate connectivity to I-40 and I-40
Business for such Forsyth County towns as Clemmons, Tobaccoville, Walkertown and
Rural Hall, and provide residents better access to job and educational
opportunities outside of their communities.
Flatiron
Constructors Inc. of Colorado is the contractor for the project.
This was one of 16 road and bridge contracts recently
awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Per state law they went to the
lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $429.7
million, nearly $39 million under engineer estimates.
