RALEIGH – The following are highlights
from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are
also featured in NCDOT Now,
the department’s weekly newscast.
Judge Henry E. Frye Bridge
Dedication
This week in Richmond County, hundreds of people came together to
honor the work of one of North Carolina’s judicial pioneers.
In 1968, Henry E. Frye became the first African American elected to
the General Assembly in the 20th century. He was appointed
to the state Supreme Court in 1983 – becoming the first African American member
of the court. Frye broke new ground again when he was named Chief Justice 16
years later.
To commemorate his achievements and work in breaking down racial
barriers, the Green Lake Road bridge over Interstate 73/74, north of Rockingham,
was named the Chief Justice Henry E. Frye bridge. Frye, age 85, attended the
ceremony alongside family members, Gov. Roy Cooper, Secretary Jim Trogdon and
other elected officials.
“He is a bridge builder. When you drive across that bridge, you can
remember not only him, and his supportive family, and his mom and dad. But also
remember what he represents,” said Gov. Cooper.
Third Party DMV Websites
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has a consumer tip for all
drivers.
Third party, unofficial websites charge customers unnecessary,
additional fees to perform DMV services. To avoid this, always make sure the
website has a government address by looking for dot.gov. In addition, many of
these sites have disclaimers posted throughout stating they are not a government
website.
If you did business on one of these sites, we suggest going back to
the site and looking to see if it offers a money-back guarantee, as several do.
If you used a major credit card and feel like you were unfairly charged, you can
ask the card issuer to help dispute the charge.
Lastly, if you have further concerns about this or other consumer
issues, you can contact the N.C. Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division
