LUMBERTON – A bridge in Robeson County will be replaced soon, thanks to a new contract from the N.C. Department of Transportation. The structure is located on Kite Road over Jacob Swamp in Lumberton.
The project is expected to get underway this winter, and the road will reopen by summer 2019. The contractor can start between Jan. 16 and Feb. 11.
The bridge, built in 1969, is being replaced because it has become functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means while remaining safe it requires extensive maintenance and no longer meets today’s traffic needs. For instance, it has a vehicle weight limits.
The $629,255 contract went to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy.
