Fourth Street Bridge Is Open

WINSTON-SALEM - A brand new bridge over Business 40 is open. The Fourth Street bridge, which connects Peters Creek Parkway and West First Street, opened at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Officials with the construction contracting firm, Flatiron, had promised the bridge would open in January – and it did.

“We are thrilled that it opened in early January,” said Larry Shaver, NCDOT Assistant Resident Engineer. “This is the first bridge to open since Business 40 closed on November 17. It is actually the second bridge, however, to open in the Business 40 Improvement Project. The Peters Creek Parkway bridge opened in November before Business 40 closed.”

The original Fourth Street bridge was built in 1955 and was demolished in March 2018. The 100-foot bridge is flanked by two sidewalks which will be finished soon.

The next bridge scheduled to open is the Broad Street bridge. Plans are for it to open in May, hopefully before the first or second game of the Winston-Salem DASH season.
