HENDERSONVILLE — A sinkhole opened up and closed an exit off Interstate 26.
N.C. Department of Transportation crews were on-site Wednesday afternoon examining a depression in the ramp from I-26 West to U.S. 25 South when a 15-foot deep sinkhole swallowed a section of the roadway.
Officials immediately closed the road and established a detour for drivers: I-26 West to Exit 53; left on Upward Road to U.S. 176 West to U.S. 25 South.
“It’s probably caused by a separated drainage structure,” Division 14 maintenance engineer Wesley Grindstaff said. “But we won’t know for sure until we are able to safely get a camera into the system.”
