Cumberland County Thoroughfare to Get Medians

FAYETTEVILLE – Work will get underway this spring on improving the safety of a 1.3-mile stretch of Cliffdale Road in Fayetteville.

An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will convert the open center turn lane into a raised median, which will redirect drivers into turning right onto Cliffdale Road between Bunce Road and just west of South Reilly Road. At intersections with traffic lights, motorists on the side roads will continue to have the option to turn right, left or go straight through.

This stretch of Cliffdale Road carries an average of 38,000 vehicles a day. Medians improve safety and reduce the risk of crashes because they reduce the opportunities for vehicles to collide into another.

The department this month awarded a $1.5 million contract to Barnhill Contracting of Rocky Mount to reconstruct this segment of Cliffdale Road. Work can start after Feb. 18, and the company will be under a contract to finish by December 2019.
