EDENTON – The Edenton License Plate Agency office, located at 810 N. Broad St., will close indefinitely starting today due to the death of the agency's contractor.
Jeannette Dowd has been the licensed contractor for the agency since April 1973 until her death today.
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles may award a temporary contract in the coming weeks to keep the agency operating in Chowan County.
The division's policy is to open applications to operate a license plate agency after the expiration or end of a contract, or when the need arises for a new or additional agency in a certain county. In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees license plate agencies, but the agencies are managed by private businesses.
LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, 125 license plate agencies operate across North Carolina.
