Road Project in Nash County Requires Temporary Closure

ROCKY MOUNT — A contractor for N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a section of Independence Drive starting at 8 a.m. Monday as part of a project to widen two miles of North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount.

Crews will install a sewer line and a storm drain under Goose Branch Crossing near the intersection with the U.S. 301 Bypass during this closure, which should last about 6 weeks.

Independence Drive will be closed to through traffic between the boulevard and Benvenue Road. Customers may access businesses on Independence Drive by entering off Benvenue Road.

NCDOT awarded a $28 million contract to PLT Construction of Wilson in 2017 to add a lane in each direction to North Wesleyan Boulevard between May Drive and Benvenue Road. The project also replaced a bridge on Sunset Avenue that reopened last December. The overall widening project is expected to be completed by May 2020.
