I-85 Improvements to Gaston County Proposed

GASTONIA – The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold two public meetings this month to present information about a project to improve about ten miles of I-85 from N.C. 273 in Mount Holly to U.S. 321 in Gastonia.

The project’s aim is to address existing and future congestion in the corridor and improve traffic flow. Proposed improvements include widening the roadway from six to eight lanes, relocating and/or replacing roadway and railroad overpasses, and upgrading interchanges.

Minor improvements are also proposed for a quarter-mile section of N.C. 7 between I-85 and U.S. 29, and to the N.C. 7/U.S. 74/29 intersection in Belmont.

People may attend either meeting:

  • Tuesday, May 21 in the Wheeler Center/Gym at Belmont-Abbey College, 100 Belmont – Mount Holly Road
  • Wednesday, May 22 at the Gastonia Conference Center, 145 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way

Both informal meetings will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. People can drop in at any time to view design maps and speak with project team members. The same information will be presented at both meetings.

Project information and materials can also be viewed online as they become available at the project’s website.
