Bridge Girder Work Requires U.S. 70 Overnight Lane Closures Next Week

HAVELOCK – Work on the a new overpass across U.S. 70 into Slocum Gate at MCAS Cherry Point will require a series of overnight lane closures next week so construction crews can set girders over the eastbound lanes of the highway.

The lane closures are planned for 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the nights of June 10, 12 and 13, and are weather conditional.

The right eastbound lane will be closed just past the intersection with Hickman Hill Loop Road. The remaining lane for eastbound traffic will be shifted to get around the work area. The left westbound lane will be closed at the Walmart intersection. The right westbound lane will continue through the work zone. Once past the work area, lanes in both directions will return to their normal traffic patterns.

For the safety of travelers as the girders are being put in place, the highway can be completely closed at the location for up to 30 minutes if needed. In addition, the Slocum Gate will be closed at 8 p.m. and from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each of the three nights there will not be access to Slocum Road or the gate.

Drivers are reminded to slow down when approaching the work zone, and to pay extra attention when going through the location.
