Downtown Fayetteville Intersections to Get More Pavement

FAYETTEVILLE – Drivers in downtown Fayetteville will encounter temporary closures next week at some Russell Street intersections.

The closures are needed to allow a N.C. Department of Transportation contractor to add pavement in intersections where CSX has recently improved its railroad crossings. The additional pavement around the crossings will provide a smoother ride for drivers at the intersections.

A contractor first needs to adjust the manhole covers, so they will match the elevation of the new pavement. This work is scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 5. Then, the paving will begin on Tuesday.

Crews will pave the Old Wilmington Road intersection first, requiring the entire intersection to be closed on Tuesday morning, if it’s not raining.

When finished, the contractor will move on to the following intersections to do the same pavement work:

  • Dick Street
  • Cool Spring Street
  • Gillespie Street

The contractor anticipates finishing all the intersections by Aug. 9. Each intersection may be closed for about four hours. Detour signs will be placed when each intersection is closed.
