Significant Improvements Planned for Lee County Roads

SANFORD – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to close one lane in both directions along Seventh Street and Charlotte Avenue for about one month for road resurfacing and alterations to current traffic lanes and intersections.

Construction will begin 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.  Work crews will be active from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  No construction will take place on Labor Day.

Existing four-lane facilities on Seventh Street, from Bragg Street to Weatherspoon Street, and Charlotte Avenue, from Seventh Street to Hawkins Avenue, will be converted into two-lane facilities with center turn lanes and outside bike lanes.

The intersections of Seventh Street and McIver Street, Seventh Street and Charlotte Avenue, and Charlotte Avenue and Third Street will be converted from signalized intersections to four-way stops.

These changes will improve safety at intersections for drivers and cyclists and reduce overall crashes.

Drivers should observe signs, drive slowly and use caution while passing through work zones.
