Public Meeting Set to Discuss Upgrades to US-401/Bickett Boulevard in Louisburg

LOUISBURG – The N.C. Department of Transportation will host a public meeting later this week to discuss a proposal to upgrade three miles of U.S. 401 (Bickett Boulevard) in Louisburg to a four-lane median divided road.

Proposed improvements include converting Bickett Boulevard between Burke Boulevard and Nash Street from a five-lane to a four-lane road with a median and widening the road from two to four lanes with a median between Nash and Main streets. Bicycle and pedestrian improvements along the corridor are also proposed.

Three design concepts are currently being evaluated to address traffic operations and safety in the study area. One concept would utilize conventional intersection improvements with a single U-turn on the corridor. A second alternative would feature Reduce Conflict Intersection (RCI) principles to improve efficiency along the corridor by routing some left turning movements through U-turns. The final option proposes using roundabouts at three major intersections along the corridor.

Area residents are invited to the public meeting Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4-7 p.m. at the Louisburg College Jordan Student Center, 501 N. Main St. in Louisburg.

No formal presentation will be made, but project staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments relative to the project throughout the meeting. The comments and information received will be taken into consideration as work on the project develops.
