Diverging Diamond Coming to I-40/Airport Boulevard Interchange

MORRISVILLE – Thanks to a new contract from the N.C. Department of Transportation, improvements are coming to the Interstate 40 interchange at Airport Boulevard.

Enhancements include converting the existing interchange to one of the Triangle's first diverging diamond interchanges, replacing the current bridge over I-40 with two new ones. Auxiliary lanes will also be added on I-40 in both directions and Airport Boulevard will be converted to a four-lane divided roadway within the project limits.

Crews are expected to mobilize by late January, begin clearing work by February and begin significant construction work by March. The work will start with widening on I-40 and construction of the west-side bridge, which is expected to be complete in 2021.

The overall project is scheduled for completion in 2023 under a $34.9 million contract with Zachry Construction Corporation.
