Bridge Struck by Vehicle Prompts Closure in Rockingham Co.

STONEVILLE – State transportation officials installed an emergency closure Tuesday of a Rockingham County bridge that appears to have been struck by an overheight vehicle.

A beam supporting the N.C. 770 bridge over U.S. 220 was damaged in the incident. N.C. Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance staff is currently assessing the damage, but preliminary estimates are that it could take several weeks to repair the bridge.

While the bridge is closed, N.C. 770 West traffic will be detoured north on U.S. 220 to the Smith Road exit and head back on U.S. 220 South to return to N.C. 770. Drivers headed east on N.C. 770 will be detoured to follow U.S. 220 South to the U.S. 220 Business exit, where they can take U.S. 220 North to access N.C. 770.

Drivers in both directions on N.C. 770 need to slow down when approaching the interchange and be prepared to exit onto U.S. 220.
