Traffic Shift Needed for Construction of New Clinton Bridge

CLINTON – To allow for construction crews to replace a bridge in Clinton, the N.C. Department of Transportation will shift traffic beginning Monday.

NCDOT will close the U.S. 421/701 North bridge over Sunset Avenue on June 8. Northbound traffic will be shifted across the median to the southbound bridge, which will temporarily carry traffic in both directions.

The outside lanes of Sunset Avenue, underneath the bridge, will also be closed during construction.

Demolition and replacement of the northbound bridge is expected to take about nine months. Once the northbound bridge construction is complete, traffic will shift to the new bridge and crews will remove and replace the southbound bridge.

The construction of the bridges will allow for an additional lane on Sunset Avenue.

While crews are working and the traffic pattern is different than normal, NCDOT urges motorists to slow down and use caution while in the area.
