Durham County Bridge Replacement to Begin Soon

DURHAM – A 90-year-old bridge in Durham County will be replaced soon, thanks to a new contract from the N.C. Department of Transportation. The structure is located on Kemp Road over Lick Creek in eastern Durham County.

The $987,000 contract went to Fred Smith Company of Raleigh.

The project will start on April 26 with the closure of Kemp Road between Virgil Road and Wake Forest Highway (N.C. 98). The detour will use Wake Forest Highway and Southview Road.

The current bridge, built in 1930, is being replaced because it has become functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means while safe for traffic it requires extensive maintenance, no longer meets today's traffic needs, and has vehicle weight limits.

The new bridge is scheduled to open in November and will serve approximately 850 vehicles a day.
