Night Work Extending Life of Bridges on Future I-26

ASHEVILLE – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation recently started a bridge preservation project that requires nightly lane closures on Future Interstate 26, north of I-240.

NHM Constructors of Asheville is working from no earlier than 7 p.m. until no later than 6 a.m. on the bridges over Broadway Street and Lookout Road.

Crews are resurfacing the four bridges at these locations by removing the top layer of concrete, making necessary repairs to steel in the bridge deck, and then pouring a new concrete surface. This operation will extend the life of each bridge.

The $1.4 million contract calls for completion by Nov. 30. Crews are scheduling work Sunday through Thursday nights each week, but they are available to operate any night depending on scheduling or weather delays.

Transportation officials remind drivers to merge early, slow down and avoid distractions in the work zones.
