Cumberland County Bridge Repairs Require Temporary Closure

FAYETTEVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation needs to close King Road at the Hoke-Cumberland county border to repair flood damage to a bridge’s substructure.

A contractor plans to close the road in both directions starting at 9 a.m. Monday. The road is expected to reopen by Nov. 8.

The signed detour will sent motorists onto Rockfish, Barefoot and Stoney Point roads to avoid the closure.

A November 2020 storm caused some of the bed material surrounding the bridge foundation to erode, or scour, into Stewarts Creek. To ensure long-term stability of the 19-year-old bridge, the contractor will drive steel sheet piles vertically into the ground behind the abutment that prevents this erosion from reaching the roadway.

The department has hired the Tara Group of Lumberton Inc. for $173,815 to perform the repairs.
