This Week at NCDOT: Safety City and Bonner Bridge Pier

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Safety City

From Oct. 14–24, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program and its partners will be hosting Safety City at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh.

Safety City is a joint effort between state agencies, law enforcement and nonprofit organizations. The display educates fairgoers about safe driving, rail safety, child passenger safety and more.

Safety City is located behind the Kerr Scott Building at 4285 Trinity Road in Raleigh. Fairgoers can enter through Gate 9 for easy access.

Bonner Bridge Pier

Earlier this month, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NCDOT, opened the new Bonner Bridge Pier to the public.

The pier stands as the last vestige of the old Bonner Bridge, which for decades carried North Carolina residents and visitors across Oregon Inlet on NC 12.

It sits just next to the south end of its replacement, the Basnight Bridge. But although the structure’s purpose has changed, it still continues to benefit North Carolinians along the coast.
