WEDDINGTON – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will soon start building a roundabout at the intersection of Tilley Morris and Weddington-Matthews Roads. The $2.1 million project recently awarded to Blythe Brothers Asphalt Co. LLC out of Charlotte.
The intersection is scheduled to close at 7 p.m. June 22. The contract calls for the roundabout to be open to traffic in September, with vegetation establishment continuing through early March 2023.
During construction, drivers will follow a marked detour along McKee Road, Weddington Road, Antioch Church Road and Beulah Church Road, returning to Weddington-Matthews Road. Local access will be maintained during construction.
Roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.
NCDOT has produced a video showing how roundabouts work and improve overall safety.
