A Fayetteville Street Will Get New Traffic Pattern

FAYETTEVILLE – A short section of Person Street near the Cape Fear River will go on a road diet when it’s repaved and restriped this year.

Currently, Person Street has four lanes between Eastern Boulevard and Water Street. The section to be improved is only one third of a mile but becomes congested during peak hours.

The traffic pattern will be changed to one through lane in each direction with the addition of an open center turn lane to allow drivers to turn left without impeding through traffic. Also, dual left-turn lanes will be added on Person Street for traffic headed south on Eastern Boulevard.

Additionally, left-turn lanes and crosswalks and a pedestrian signal will be installed on Person Street and Broad Street.

By reducing the through lanes, drivers wanting to turn left along this stretch will have an improved line of sight of opposing traffic.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $566,000 contract to Barnhill Contracting Co. last week to make the improvements. The contractor can start next month, weather.
