U.S. 301 in Wilson County Requires Temporary Closure

WILSON – The first of several planned closures to improve the storm drainage on U.S. 301 west of Wilson is scheduled to occur this weekend.

An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor is improving the safety and operation of where U.S. 301 and N.C. 581 intersect. The contractor will install concrete traffic islands and a reduced conflict intersection that will redirect drivers on N.C. 581 into turning right to reduce the risk of serious crashes.

As part of the project, a total five closures of U.S. 301 will be needed to install new crossline pipes in the vicinity of this intersection. The first of such closure is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.

While closed, drivers will be detoured onto Simpson Road and Saint Mary's Road and N.C. 581. Drivers should slow down near the closure and plan for a longer trip using the detour.

More closures in the coming weeks will be needed as the contractor is able to obtain more piping material. When those closures are scheduled, the NCDOT will advertise them on DriveNC.gov under “Wilson County". In addition, digital message boards along U.S. 301 will announce the future closures for this project.
