N.C. 55 in Harnett, Wake Counties Will Be Widened

N.C. 55 widening around Angier

N.C. 55, shown here, will be widened just north of this Harnett County town, and the first segment of an Angier bypass will be constructed under a new NCDOT contract.

ANGIER – Construction to widen N.C. 55 to four lanes, construct a median and build a bypass around Angier will start next spring, after the state Transportation Department this week awarded a $61.5 million contract.

The segment to be built will run from N.C. 210 in northeastern Harnett County to Jicarilla Lane in southern Wake County, for a total of 4.5 miles. As part of this contract, a bypass on new location will be built on Angier's west side, while a portion of N.C. 55 north of town will be widened from its current two lanes.

The highway is a major north-south route in the fast-growing Triangle, and it is experiencing heavy commuter traffic. The widening and new bypass will alleviate congestion, plan for more traffic growth and enhance highway safety.

The winning bidder, Highland Paving Co. of Fayetteville, will start construction next spring and have until the end of 2026 to complete the project.

The NCDOT plans to award another contract next spring to finish the bypass from N.C. 210 to south of Angier. For more details, visit this NCDOT project page.
