RALEIGH – State transportation contract crews have reopened Athens Drive where the road crosses Interstate 440 and has been closed for about a year.
The road closed last February so crews could safely demolish the old bridge over the Beltline and replace it as part of the ongoing I-440 Improvements Project. The new bridge is longer and taller to accommodate I-440 traffic and also features wider lanes for drivers and the addition of sidewalks.
Work on the traffic signal at the nearby intersection of Athens Drive and Kaplan Drive is expected to continue over the next several months.
While the road is open, drivers should continue to be mindful of crews who will be stationed in this area until the work is complete.
