I-40 Overnight Resurfacing Resumes in Haywood County

CANTON – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation recently resumed a resurfacing contract to improve sections of Interstate 40 in Haywood County. Those overnight operations will include ramp closures next week.

Crews from APAC Atlantic Inc. DBA Harrison Construction of Asheville resumed a two-year project to resurface I-40 from U.S. 74 (Exit 27) to beyond the Haywood/Buncombe county line at mile marker 35.

Last year, they completed improvements from U.S. 74 to Champion Drive. This year, they’re finishing the rest of the work by starting on the westbound lanes before circling around to complete the eastbound lanes. All operations and lane closures occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights.

Next week, crews will close the westbound Newfound Road exit and onramps at night before moving to the ramps at Champion Drive the following nights. Each exit will serve as a detour route for the other exit.
This $8.7 million contract focuses construction work on resurfacing operations but also includes drainage improvements and new markings from end to end.

Transportation officials encourage drivers to plan ahead, remain alert and obey all posted signs approaching and through the work zones.
