RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a vehicle is stolen every 32 seconds. Use these tips to help protect your vehicle from theft.

  • Lock your doors
  • Never leave your keys inside the vehicle
  • Close your windows
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Utilize your car alarm
For more information on vehicle theft prevention, go to NCDOT.gov and search “Vehicle Theft.”

Summer Kids Fare

NC By Train’s Summer Kids fare allows one child under 12 to receive a 50 percent discount when riding the train with an adult.

You and your family still have one more month to ride the train at a discounted price.

The discounted tickets are available for purchase through Sept. 3, and can be used through Sept. 4 for travel on Carolinian and Piedmont trains.

For discount code information and to purchase tickets, go to NCByTrain.org.

Train Safety Messaging

BeRailSafe is NCDOT’s rail accident prevention and public safety outreach program.

This program reminds people of the importance of rail safety.

People should never walk on, take pictures on or play on railroad tracks – even if they look like they are not in use. And no one should ever stop a car on the railroad tracks.

For more information on safety precautions, visit BeRailSafe.org.
