Pipe replacements to Close U.S. 74A Saturday

FAIRVIEW — A one-day project will close a section of U.S. 74A on Saturday and upgrade the drainage system along the road between Fairview and Gerton.

N.C. Department of Transportation crews will close the highway from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting. A marked detour will direct traffic to Hollywood Road, Garren Creek Road, Morgan Hill Road and N.C. 9 before returning to U.S. 74A in Bat Cave.

The detour is about 5 miles and seven minutes longer than a trip on U.S. 74A from Hollywood Road to Bat Cave. Local southbound traffic will be provided access to Sugar Hollow Road (HNG Farms), and local northbound traffic may advance up to the Strawberry Gap trailhead parking.

Two pipes are being replaced prior to resurfacing, which will commence later this year on a schedule coordinated with the contractor.

Transportation officials advise drivers to plan ahead for trips, remain alert while driving and obey all posted traffic signs.
