This Week at NCDOT: NC By Train Record Ridership, New Vehicle Technologies

RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in this week's NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

NC By Train Record Ridership

In 2023, NC By Train carried 641,000 passengers, breaking the previous year’s record and increasing ridership by 23% overall.

Additional frequency launched in July and special stops for events such as the N.C. State Fair, Lexington Barbecue Festival, and football trains to Charlotte contributed to the rise.

New Vehicle Technologies

The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking information from the public on new and advanced technologies to improve transportation.

NCDOT’s Aviation and Integrated Mobility divisions issued requests for information, or RFI’s, to identify and explore new ground and air vehicle technologies.

Information learned will be used to inform future decisions about zero-emission aircraft and automated vehicles.

The requests for information are part of NCDOT’s ongoing Advance Mobility NC campaign, aimed at creating a multimodal transportation system that improves the mobility of people and freight.
