WILSON – A couple of intersections on Airport Boulevard Northwest will get traffic signals to improve safety after the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $778,000 bid last week.
The signals with metal poles and mast arms will be added at these boulevard intersections:
- Jetstream Drive Northwest
The new signals will include protected green arrows for left turns when cars are queued in those lanes; otherwise, drivers may turn left under a flashing yellow arrow when there is a safe gap in traffic.
The NCDOT studied the crash patterns and traffic volumes at these two intersections, and determined they warranted these improvements.
The contractor, Traffic Control Devices of Florida, is expected to start this project early next year and complete it by next spring.
As a part of this contract, the existing traffic signal at East Raleigh Boulevard and East Grand Avenue/Fairview Road in Rocky Mount will be upgraded with pedestrian signals that will have a push-button activation for people to more safely use the marked crosswalks.
