Mini-Roundabout Nearing Completion in Randolph County

ASHEBORO - The Uwharrie Charter Schools is nearing completion of a mini-roundabout on U.S. 220 Business at the intersection of Pisgah Covered Bridge Road.

Crews expect to have the new traffic pattern in full effect by Dec. 25.

With the Uwharrie Charter Middle and High Schools located nearby, the roundabout was required to mitigate the additional traffic that was determined by a Traffic Impact Analysis conducted by the school to help improve safety and mobility at the intersection.

This single-lane “mini” roundabout design is smaller than a typical roundabout in order to reduce impacts to surrounding properties.

These smaller designs have shown to reduce injury and fatal crashes by 59% according to a 2021 study by UNC-Charlotte.

Motorists should utilize these helpful tips when navigating these new traffic shifts:

  • Reduce speed approaching the roundabout.
  • Yield to any vehicles or bicyclists already in the roundabout.
  • Everyone using the roundabout moves in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Use turn signals to signal your intended exit.
  • Commercial trucks and other large vehicles can drive over the concrete center island, as well as the splitter concrete islands.
