NCDOT Now: Snow in Eastern NC, Historic Snow Anniversary, Federal Grant

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Snow Impacts NC Again

North Carolinians and the state’s Department of Transportation continue to clean up after another round of winter weather.

This is the second winter storm of the year to impact much of the state – this week affected mostly the east.

With the winter season far from over, NCDOT reminds people to stay at home if they can, but if folks need to be on the road:

  • Scrape off snow or ice and defrost windows;

  • Slow down and increase following distance; and

  • Be alert to shaded spots and bridges as they freeze first.

Remembering 2000 Snowstorm

As snow impacts the state this year, many folks remember where they were when North Carolina saw a historic snowfall 25 years ago.

During the rare event in 2000, the Triangle saw about two feet of snow. Current NCDOT crews working during the time say it is a storm they’ll never forget.

“Unexpected. It was the biggest snowstorm I had ever experienced in my lifetime and my career," Franklin County Maintenance Engineer Cameron Murphy recalled.

RAISE Grant

A central North Carolina town won more than $13 million in a federal grant to design and build a mobility hub.

NCDOT will administer the grant for the town of Wake Forest, which will design and construct a rail station for the S-Line passenger rail service
