Bridges Street Improvements
Planning and development is underway to construct a new roadway on Bridges Street from northwest of McCabe Road in Carteret County.
Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Preservation Project
A preservation project, to extend the life of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, which connects New Hanover and Brunswick counties, was completed in May 2024.
Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing the replacement of Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The bridge, built in 1969, connects Brunswick and New Hanover counties in southeastern North Carolina.
Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement Study
The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement is currently unfunded for right of way acquisition or construction; however, due to the need to begin planning to replace the our aging infrastructure a feasibility study began in 2019 to look at possible options for replacement.

Charlotte Gateway Station: Phase 1
Construction is complete on the first phase of the Charlotte Gateway Station project, a multi-modal station that combines public transit and intercity transportation in Uptown Charlotte.
Charlotte Passenger Rail Facility
Planning and development are underway on a proposed passenger railcar maintenance facility southwest of Uptown Charlotte in Mecklenburg County.

Planning and development are underway for the proposed Daniel Boone Parkway project in Watauga County.

Dickinson Avenue Improvements
Construction is underway to improve 1.3 miles of Dickinson Avenue from N.C. 11 (Memorial Drive) to Reade Circle. This project is a collaboration involving the N.C. Department of Transportation and the city of Greenville.
East John Street/Old Monroe Road Widening
Proposed widening of approximately 6.5 miles of East John Street and Old Monroe Road from Trade Street to Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road in Mecklenburg and Union counties
Eastern Loop (U-2525B)
Construction of a four-lane freeway from U.S. 70 Relocation to U.S. 29 north of Greensboro, completing the U.S. 70 interchange; construction of two interchanges connecting the Greensboro Loop to Huffine Mill Road and U.S. 29
Evans Street/Old Tar Road Widening
NCDOT is planning to widen Evans Street/Old Tar Road, which connects Greenville and Winterville in Pitt County.
Fayetteville Outer Loop Completion
Completion of a loop to improve vehicle capacity and relieve congestion along the I-295 Corridor as well as connect Fort Bragg to the Strategic I-95 Corridor and enhance mobility options for the military
Fire Tower/Portertown Roads Widening
Proposed widening of Fire Tower and Portertown roads from Charles Boulevard to 10h Street and installation of a raised median as well as other improvements
Gordon Road Widening
Construction is underway to widen exactly 2.5 miles of Gordon Road from Interstate 40 to Market Street (U.S. 17 Business) in New Hanover County.

Completion of the Greensboro Urban Loop to help relieve I-40 congestion at I-85 Business and U.S. routes 29, 70, 220 and 421
Harkers Island Bridge Replacement
Construction is complete to replace existing bridges over The Straits on N.C. 1332/1335 that connect Harkers Island to the mainland
I-26 Widening
Construction to widen approximately 22.2 miles of I-26 from U.S. 25, near Hendersonville, to I-40/240, south of Asheville
I-40 Corridor: Triangle Improvements
Several projects across the Triangle are under construction to widen Interstate 40 from southeast Raleigh to Clayton and widen I-85/I-40 from Hillsborough to Durham County

Construction is underway to widen I-40 from southeast Raleigh to N.C. 42 in Clayton as well as improvements to the I-40/N.C. 42 intersection
I-40/77 Interchange
Construction is underway on several improvements to the I-40/77 interchange in Statesville
I-40/I-440 Interchange & I-40 Widening
Proposed work to rebuild the existing interchange at I-40/I-440/U.S. 1/U.S. 64 near Cary and to widen I-40 from the I-440/U.S. 64 interchange to Lake Wheeler Road in Wake County
I-40/I-440 Rebuild (Fortify)
Replacement of pavement on I-40 in Raleigh, west of the Jones Franklin Road overpass, to I-440/U.S. 64 as well as I-440 from I-40/U.S. 64 to just north of U.S. 264 (Knightdale Bypass)
I-440 & Blue Ridge Road Improvements
Construction is underway to widen I-440 East and I-440 West in Raleigh and Cary between north of Wade Avenue and south of Walnut Street
I-440 Interchange Improvements at Glenwood Avenue
Proposed work to address congestion and safety concerns at both the I-440/Glenwood Avenue interchange and the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Blue Ridge/Lead Mine roads
I-485 Express Lanes
Construction improvements to add one 17-mile express lane in each direction along I-485 from I-77 to U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard) in Mecklenburg County

A 2005 feasibility study on additional alignment alternatives for I-74 in Brunswick and Columbus counties.
I-77 Express Lanes
Completed improvements, including express lanes in each direction, along 26 miles of I-77 – from the Brookshire Freeway (Exit 11) in Mecklenburg County to N.C. 150 (Exit 36) in Iredell County
I-77 South Express Lanes
Planning and development are underway to upgrade 11 miles of I-77 from the South Carolina State Line to I-277/NC 16 (Brookshire Freeway).
I-85 Widening - Gaston County
Proposed widening of a 10-mile section of I-85 as well as three-tenths of a mile of N.C. 7 in Gaston County
I-85/I-485 Interchange Improvements
Planning and development are underway to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and crashes on the I-485 inner and outer offramps and I-85 southbound lanes, west of Charlotte.
I-95 Corridor Improvements
Multiple projects are upgrading and improving the I-95 corridor in North Carolina.
I-95 Widening in Lumberton
The N.C. Department of Transportation will widen nine miles of I-95 to a total of eight landes in Lumberton between mile markers 13 and 22, and upgrade the three intercnanges with new bridges and ramps to modern design standards and replace four other bridges.
I-95 Widening North of Fayetteville
Construction is underway to widen approximately 25 miles of I-95 to eight lanes between I-95 Business/U.S. 301 (Exit 56) in Cumberland County and I 40 (Exit 81) in Johnston County
I-95 Widening South of Fayetteville
Proposed widening of Interstate 95 to eight lanes south of Fayetteville between mile markers 22 and 40, where I-95 and I-95 Business 95 split, and upgrade the bridges to modern design standards.
Independence Boulevard Extension
Proposed extension of Independence Boulevard – near the Covil/Montgomery Avenue corridor – 1.7 miles from the vicinity of Randall Parkway to U.S. 74 (Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway) in Wilmington
Johnson Street & Sandy Ridge Road Widening
Proposed work to widen Johnson Street and Sandy Ridge Road between High Point and Greensboro.
Kinston Bypass
A proposed 21-25-mile, four-lane, median-divided freeway in Lenoir County and in the western portions of Craven and Jones counties
Liberty Road I-40 Interchange
A proposed interchange at I-40 and Liberty Road in Candler that would make it quicker for drivers to get on I-40 in western Buncombe County
Lindsay C. Warren Bridge Replacement (Alligator River Bridge)
Construction is underway to replace the existing Lindsay C. Warren Bridge (Alligator River Bridge) on U.S. 64 over Alligator River in Tyrrell and Dare counties.
Mid-Currituck Bridge
A proposed toll bridge across Currituck Sound that would connect the mainland with the Outer Banks in Currituck County
Military Cutoff Road Extension
Construction is completed for the extension of Military Cutoff Road from Market Street to the U.S. 17 Wilmington Bypass in New Hanover County.
Miller Boulevard Widening in Havelock
Planning and development are underway to widen Miller Boulevard and N.C. 101 (Fontana Boulevard) to four lanes with a raised median between Lake Road to Outer Banks Drive in Havelock, Craven County.
Monroe Expressway
Completed an 18-mile, six-lane toll road extending from U.S. 74 near I-485 in eastern Mecklenburg County, southeast to U.S. 74 at Marshville in Union County
Multimodal Connected Vehicle Pilot
The N.C. Department of Transportation is piloting a cutting-edge project to improve mobility and safety on the roads surrounding N.C. State University in Raleigh.
N.C. 105 Widening
Construction is underway to widen a 4.5-mile section of N.C. 105 from two lanes to four lanes between Foscoe and Boone in Watauga County
N.C. 109 Improvements
Improvements to NC 109 from Old Greensboro Road in Davidson County to I-40/US 311 in Forsyth County
N.C. 119 Relocation
Construction completed on a portion of N.C. 119 in Mebane – from I-85 to existing the N.C. 119 near Mrs. White Lane
N.C. 12 Improvements South of Rodanthe
Proposed improvements to several sections of N.C. 12 on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands
N.C. 143 Improvements
Proposed safety improvements on N.C. 143 west of Robbinsville from West Buffalo Creek to N.C. 143 Business
N.C. 147 Extension
Proposed work would extend N.C. 147 south of I-540 in Morrisville, helping to improve traffic flow and provide a connection between Davis Drive, the Research Triangle Park and I-540.
N.C. 150 Widening Improvements
Proposed improvements on a 15-mile stretch of N.C. 150 in Catawba and Iredell counties, including additional lanes, I-77 interchange reconfiguration and several bridge replacements
N.C. 168 Improvements Feasibility Study
The purpose of the N.C. 168 Improvements feasibility study is to determine the best design and preliminary cost estimates for construction, utilities and right-of-way. N.C. 168 is a very busy corridor with Moyock becoming a bedroom community for people who work in Virginia.

Proposed widening of N.C. 42 in Johnston County between N.C. 50 and U.S. 70 Business as well as three bridge replacements in the area

N.C. 54 Corridor Improvements
Proposed improvements to the N.C. 54 corridor from U.S. 15/501 in Orange County to N.C. 55 in Durham County
N.C. 55 Extension - Fuquay-Varina
The purpose of this proposed project is to improve traffic flow at the following intersections: U.S. 401 at N.C. 42-55 and N.C. 55 at N.C. 42. The project would widen a section of existing Judd Parkway and provide a connecting roadway between N.C. 55 and Judd Parkway in Fuquay-Varina.
N.C. 55 Widening in Wake & Harnett Counties
Construction is underway to widen a portion of N.C. 55 into a four-lane, divided roadway (with two lanes going in each direction) in northern Harnett County and southern Wake County.
N.C. 62 Widening - Ramada Road to U.S. 70
Proposed widening an approximately 1-mile stretch of N.C. 62 to improve traffic flow and safety
N.C. 73 Improvements (Lincoln & Mecklenburg)
Proposed widening of an 8.5-mile stretch of N.C. 73 from N.C. 16 in Lincoln County to Northcross Drive in Huntersville in Mecklenburg County
N.C. 73 Improvements (Mecklenburg & Cabarrus)
Proposed widening of a 14-mile stretch of N.C. 73 from N.C. 115 in Mecklenburg County to U.S. 29 in Cabarrus County

A comprehensive land-use, urban design and transportation plan regarding the N.C. 73 corridor in Cabarrus, Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties
Nashville-Rocky Mount Projects
Construction of is underway to widen stretches of Eastern Avenue, North Old Carriage Road and Sunset Avenue between Nashville and Rocky Mount as well as an interchange at the Sunset Avenue bridge over I-95

Construction of a six-lane freeway from U.S. 29, north of Greensboro, to Lawndale Drive in northern Greensboro
Poplar Tent Road Widening
Proposed improvements on a 4.4-mile section of Poplar Tent Road in Concord from Gable Oaks Lane/Woodhaven Place to Concord Parkway (US 29-601 Bypass)
Raeford Road Median (Fayetteville)
Work will replace the open center turn lane with a median along 5.5 miles of Raeford Road (U.S. 401 Business) in Fayetteville between Hampton Oaks Drive and Fairway Drive
Ramsey Street Improvements
Proposed improvements on nearly nine miles of Ramsey Street (U.S. 401) from Rowan/Grove streets to just north of Slocomb Road in Cumberland County.
Rea Road Extension
Proposed 1.7-mile extension of Rea Road in Union County from N.C. 16 (Providence Road) east to N.C. 84 (Weddington Road) as well as the proposed widening o 2.7 miles of Rea Road from N.C. 84 to Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road
Rockingham Bypass (Future I-73/74)
Work will build a four-lane, median-divided freeway, which will be designated as Future I-73/74, on a new location near Rockingham.

Proposed widening of Russ Avenue (U.S. 276) approximately 1.1 miles from Phillips Road to North Main Street (U.S. 23 Business) in Haywood County
