RALEIGH — Work to build the track side
portion of Charlotte Gateway Station, a future multi-modal facility that will
consolidate public transit and intercity transportation modes in Uptown
Charlotte, can begin under a new contract.
The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded the $48.6 million bid
to Crowder Construction Company of Charlotte.
This contract will construct Phase 1 of the project, the Tracks,
Signals & Structures (TS&S) phase, which includes the platform,
structures and roadbed for the tracks to get passenger trains to the future
station.
Work on Phase 1 can begin as soon as July 9, with an estimated
completion date of April 2022.
In Phase 2, via a public-private partnership agreement, the City of
Charlotte will construct the station building under a separate contract to be
issued later this year or early next year.
The facility will serve as a hub for inter-city Amtrak service,
CATS local and express bus services, inter-city bus service, taxi and
ridesharing services, along with improved bicycle and pedestrian access.
This was one of 18 road, rail and bridge contracts the department
issued recently. Per state law they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each
project. The contracts are worth $144.4 million.
