SMITHFIELD – A contractor must close a
portion of Booker Dairy Road in Smithfield overnight next week to install a
drainage pipe associated with a widening project.
The closure near the road’s intersection with White Oak Drive is
scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, and end at 5 a.m. the
following day. The crews will backfill the hole with dirt and stone and later
patch it with asphalt.
Drivers on Buffalo Road should detour onto Hospital Road and
Brightlight Boulevard (U.S. 301) and then back onto Booker Dairy Road. From the
boulevard, motorists should turn right onto Hospital Road, then right onto
Buffalo and right onto Booker Dairy Road.
The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $13.2 million
contract in January to Branch Civil Inc. of Roanoke, Va. The contractor will
widen Booker Dairy Road from two lanes into four lanes with a raised median
between Buffalo Road and just east of Bradford Street. From there, crews will
extend the four lanes eastward onto a new location, paralleling the existing
Booker Dairy Road, before connecting with Ava Gardner Avenue at the Walmart.
The project began in March and is scheduled to be completed by Fall
2019.
