FAYETTEVILLE – The Aberdeen &
Rockfish Railroad has informed the N.C. Department of Transportation it must
close Skibo Road (U.S. 401 Bypass) in both directions near Cliffdale Road to
upgrade its rail crossing, starting at 5 a.m. on Monday, June 18.
The railroad anticipates the closure lasting a week, with the busy
corridor scheduled to reopen at 5 p.m. Friday, June 22. Changeable message
boards announcing the closure were turned on today.
Skibo Road will be closed between Cliffdale Road and Chason Ridge
Drive, which provides access to Best Buy and Target and another shopping area.
Motorists going to the nearby Freedom Town Shopping Center will use the
Cliffdale Road entrance.
To avoid the closure, drivers should use Cliffdale Road, the All
American Freeway and Raeford Road. This map shows the recommended detour.
Railroad workers will replace the rubber-type crossing with more
durable concrete panels. Aberdeen & Rockfish completed the same type of
improvement last year on Raeford and South McPherson Church roads in
Fayetteville.
After the rail improvements are made, NCDOT workers will repave the
area to make a smooth driving transition across the rail crossing.
