Wayne County Bridge Will Reopen Today After Repairs

UPDATED RELEASE: Mark Edwards Road will reopen at 5 p.m. today, June 15, and remain open to traffic throughout the weekend. NCDOT crews plan to close the bridge again on Monday to wrap up maintenance work. The bridge should be closed for only one day.

Part of the original release on June 13 follows:

GOLDSBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation today closed a stretch of Mark Edwards Road in Wayne County to make emergency bridge repairs.

NCDOT maintenance crews will repair parts of the substructure that have deteriorated on the bridge over West Bear Creek, near Parkstown Road.

The bridge, which carries truck traffic, was built in 1950 and partially reconstructed 22 years later. Although the substructure is made of wood, the deck that vehicles cross is concrete.

The bridge may reopen as early as Saturday, but possibly as late as Monday, June 18.

In the meantime, drivers should use New Hope Road, U.S. 13 and the U.S. 70 Bypass as the detour.
