SANFORD – Work to replace a 65-year-old Lee County bridge on
Lee Avenue will require a detour starting Monday, June 18.
Workers will start work to replace the bridge over Gasters Creek, which is
south of Sanford. The bridge is safe, but is nearing its useful lifespan. It
requires more frequent maintenance and has vehicle weight limits and narrow
lanes that do not meet modern traffic needs.
The N.C. Department of Transportation last year awarded an $806,426 bridge
replacement contract to Dane Construction Inc., of Mooresville.
Until the new bridge opens, a detour will
send traffic onto N.C. 78 (Main Street), Lemon Springs Road and Andrews Road.
The road is scheduled to reopen in November.
