SYLVA — Proposals on a plan to replace an old bridge on Montieth
Gap Road in Cullowhee and to provide some roadway improvements will be presented
at a public meeting next week.
The project includes replacing the bridge over Cullowhee Creek and
improving an intersection on Montieth Gap Road between South Painter Road and
Ledbetter Road in Cullowhee.
The proposed improvements will increase safety — especially for
pedestrians at the location near Western Carolina University — by replacing the
43-year-old bridge, and aligning South Painter Road and Ledbetter Road into a
single intersection or roundabout.
Two proposals for the project that originated in the Jackson County
2017-2040 Comprehensive Transportation Plan will be presented by the N.C.
Department of Transportation from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Cullowhee
Baptist Church.
Area residents may attend the meeting at the church, located at 148
Central Drive in Cullowhee, at any time as no formal presentation will be made.
The meeting will include maps of the two proposals, which can be found at https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/publicmeetings/
Comments on the proposals will be accepted at the meeting or via
phone, email or mail until July 10. Contact John McCray, Division 14 Engineering
