Public Input Sought for Proposed Hertford S-Bridge Replacement Project

HERTFORD - The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting the public to an informal-style meeting on Thursday, June 28 to learn more about the proposed improvements to U.S. 17 Business/N.C. 37 causeway and the replacement of the Hertford S-Bridge over the Perquimans River.

The purpose of this project is to replace both the road and the bridge to provide a reliable and safe direct connection between downtown Hertford, Winfall and northern Perquimans County.

NCDOT has previously reached out to the public throughout the planning and preliminary design phases of the project. In August 2016, NCDOT chose Alternative B as the preferred choice after consulting with local officials, and state and federal agencies. It calls for a new swing-span bridge with a 12-foot vertical clearance for boats to be built next to the current bridge.

NCDOT has refined that preferred alternative based on feedback from the public and towns. The project is now in the design-build phase, which includes final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction.  This meeting is being held to present the current design to the public and get its input.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Perquimans County Community Center located at 310 Granby Street in Hertford. Project information and materials can also be viewed on the project website.

Interested citizens may attend the meeting at any time, as no formal presentations will be made.  NCDOT representatives will be on hand to provide information on the project, answer questions, and receive comments. The opportunity to submit written comments will also be provided at the meeting or can be done via phone, email or mail by July 31, 2018.
