Rained-out Replacement Ready to Roll

DOBSON — N.C. Department of Transportation crews from Surry County will be working under the lights — and hopefully the stars — to repair a section of N.C. 89 later this week.

Inclement weather last Thursday postponed the repairs by one week.

Transportation officials need to close a short section of N.C. 89 starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday until sunrise the next morning to replace two pipes under the highway near Low Gap.

The repairs will be conducted about 200 yards south of the intersection with N.C. 18. The work will be performed at night to limit the impact to traffic in the area. No detour will be posted for the one-night closure.

“This work has to be done,” Surry County Maintenance Engineer Mark Williams said. “We knew that we couldn’t finish in one night in the rain, so we delayed the work by a week.

“There’s no easy or short detour, so we will get it all done in one night.”

Transportation officials remind motorists to drive with caution, obey all posted signs and slow down in work zones.
