U.S. 15/501 in Moore County Under Repair But Open to Businesses, Residences

Maintenance workers on Tuesday replace dirt and gravel where a drainage pipe under U.S. 15/501 in Moore County was replaced.

ABERDEEN – State transportation maintenance crews are replacing deteriorating drainage pipes under a 5.5-mile section of U.S. 15/501 in eastern Moore County before the highway is repaved later this summer.

Because of the work, motorists traveling through the area are encouraged to use a detour that involves South Plank Road near the Lee County line, U.S. 1 Business in Cameron and N.C. 24/27.

However, most of the affected U.S. route remains open to allow local access for residents and customers of businesses; only a small section is closed at a time where a pipe is being replaced. The work will improve storm drainage along the highway.

“Many of these crossline pipes have collapsed or failed, and we want to replace them and get this road back in solid shape before the contractor comes in and repaves everything,” said Josh Brooks, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s maintenance engineer for Lee and Moore counties in Division 8.

The pipe work begin in mid-May and is expected to conclude by the end of July. Then, a contractor will resurface the same stretch of U.S. 15/501.
