WILMINGTON – Two new members joined the N.C. Board of Transportation during the board’s monthly meeting in Wilmington Thursday, and three board members moved into new assignments.
Gov. Roy Cooper earlier this month nominated Thomas Taft Jr. of Greenville and Michael Alford of Jacksonville as new board members. He also nominated three current members to new positions: Grady Hunt of Pembroke, Landon Zimmer of Wilmington and General Hugh Overholt of New Bern.
The five board members were sworn in Thursday by District Court Judge Russell Davis of Wilmington.
Thomas Taft Jr., a Greenville developer, represents Division 2 (Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico and Pitt counties). Taft serves as a principal at Taft Family Ventures, an investment company. He serves on the Greenville Board of Adjustment and the ECU Medical and Health Sciences Foundation board.
Michael K. Alford, a Jacksonville automobile dealer, represents Division 3 (Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender and Sampson counties) – returning to a role he filled on the board under the administration of former Gov. Beverly Perdue. Alford is president of Marine Chevrolet Cadillac.
Grady Hunt, a Pembroke attorney, represents Division 6 (Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett and Robeson counties). He previously was the board’s at-large member for rural transportation. As a partner in Locklear, Jacobs, Hunt & Brooks Attorneys at Law, Hunt practices government, education and real estate law. He serves as legal counsel to Hoke County and the Public Schools of Robeson County.
Landon G. Zimmer, a Wilmington attorney and developer, is the board’s at-large member for the state ports and aviation. He previously represented Division 3. As in-house counsel for Zimmer Development Co., Zimmer is responsible for project development, market selection, general corporate administration and strategic planning. He serves on the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and the Bald Head Island Transportation Authority board.
General Hugh R. Overholt, a New Bern attorney, is the board’s at-large member for rural transportation. He previously represented Division 2. A retired U.S. Army major general, Overholt is a government relations attorney with Ward and Smith, PA.
